Tips Before Going to the Beach

So its your day off and you plan to hit the beach. These tips may provide some must to enjoy your day of away.

Always bring the following essential items:

Drinks - whether water or soda, salty air and water will make you thirsty and don't waste money paying for expensive drinks at a stand or vending machine
Food - same goes here as from last point, bring a cooler. You won't regret it, eating snacks and listening to waves churn is like heaven....zzz...
Sunscreen - don't think sunscreen is for 'uncool' people. My favorite is a clear aerosol spray sunscreen, you can get them anywhere. It only takes like 2 minutes to give you great coverage and give you a sexy shine. For faces use a sunscreen stick with a non-greasy formula. That way when you get wet, the sunscreen won't rub in your eyes and if you miss a spot it's clear so you don't have white lines on your face. And nothing is unsexier (yes i just made up that word) than being burnt and having your skin look 80 when your 20 because you wanted to bake in the sun all day.
Umbrella - get a cheap $15 umbrella and put it up to lounge under so you don't bake completely when you are laying out and to keep your stuff cooler from being in the shade. Also a plus, when you are out in the water it is easier to track down where you are on the beach from seeing your umbrella up on the shore. Currents can move you down to the beach without you realizing it so you can keep tabs on your location from watching your umbrella.
Rubber Mallet - I never forget it, most people never think to bring a mallet to hammer their umbrella into the sand so it won't fly away. I usually have to let others around me borrow it and you will never have to worry about fiddling with getting your umbrella in the sand.
Cell phone - always have a way to reach 911 if an emergency arises.
Quarters - most beach towns have meters to park at and unless you want to give your credit card number over the phone or wait in line at a credit card machine, always bring change.
Vinegar/Alcohol - always keep a small bottle with you to treat jellyfish stings and possible cuts from sharp seashells.
Water shoes - If you are going on a boat or to a section of the beach not on the face, like in a marshier area you will need these. Go pick up a cheap pair somewhere. Cutting up you feet on shells and getting pinched by crabs is not fun and stepping on flounders will scare the mess out of you.
Hat/headband/hair tie - its usually windy at the beach and having your hair blow in your face all day is not fun. And usually when you leave your hair looks a mess anyway so keep it pinned back to make it not fluff in the wind.
Beach towels/chairs - nobody wants to sit on hot sand bring something to sit on :)
Magazine or book - it's the best time to get in your reading zone.
Bathing suit coverup - don't forget to bring something to cover up in especially if you might be going somewhere before or after the beach. You don't want to be walking around in just a bikini all day.
Bathing suit tips:

Always buy a suit that is snug with trying on. Getting in the water will loosen the material and you don't want your bottoms or top moving to show inappropriate sights.
Board shorts and rash guards - let me just say amazing. Sometimes when salt water gets on your skin and your skin rubs against something else the friction will cause a saltwater rash and they are not fun. Wearing board shorts or rash guards will prohibit this from happening and keep you warm at the beginning or end of swim season when the water is cooler as well as evening.
Don't buy a thin swimsuit. If you buy a white or light colored thin suit and it gets wet, others can see right through it. Be aware of thin materials.
Some other misc tips:

Remember that you are not the only thing in the water. Fish are also sharing the water with you so don't be alarmed. If you see a big school of big fish you may have to get out of the water because sharks usually tend to follow schools.
Sharks are not usually aggressive and will probably not bother you. But if you feel at abrupt smack or bump on your leg and see a shark get out of the water, that is a warning sign that it is aggressive and it may come back to attack.
Dolphins are common at beaches. Do not try to feed them or get near them in the water, they are wild animals and not the dolphins at Sea World. They will bite and attack without warning.
Do not mess with jellyfish, even if they are dead on the beach they can still sting you if you touch their tentacles.
Do not feed the seagulls, they will not leave you alone for the rest of the day and will fly over you all day and probably poop on you and others around you.
Be mindful of laws and regulations. Certain beaches do not allow dogs or alcohol and nothing is worse than getting a $250 fine on your day off at the beach.
Get there in the morning, people tend to arrive around lunch time but if you go earlier in the morning you can get a great spot before the sun gets too hot.
If you can't swim, don't go into deep water. Currents and riptides can be strong and to beat a riptide swim parallel to the shore. Learn to swim at a swim class before you take on the deeper waters.
Well that's all I can think of at the moment, please leave comments or questions. Thanks :)
